How to Become a Christian

By Les Sherlock, March 2021, but originally posted 2016

The way to become a Christian - a child of God - is very simple. However, it does raise many issues that some people may need addressing. So we'll look at those later. First, let's see what the Bible says about the things we need to do.

What We Do

It’s as easy as A, B, C:

A: Accept

We must accept that what God has told us is true: we have failed to be what He originally intended us to be, and our failure - our sin - will receive the penalty His nature demands.

Jesus said to him, 'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'  On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets."

Matthew 22:37-40

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:23

B: Believe

Believe in Jesus Christ, that His perfect sacrifice for us was sufficient to take the penalty we deserved, leaving no further consequences for us to have.

…Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved

Acts 16:31

…The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!

John 1:29

C: Confess

Confess (not to any human, but to God) by praying to Him.

If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

1 John 1:8–9

This means simply speaking to Him, preferably while on your own so you can do it audibly - He hears every word you say - telling Him:

  • that you have failed to live the way He wishes.

  • that you are sorry for this, and ask for His forgiveness on the basis that Jesus has paid the price in His death on the cross.

  • Ask Him to come into your life and lead you in the way He wants you to go.

  • Thank Him for providing the way and for fulfilling His promise in you.

The result of this is that you are changed: the Bible calls it being born again, because the old life is now over and a new one has begun.

Jesus answered and said to him, "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

John 3:3

…having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God.

1  Peter 1:23

For some people, when they have done this they are immediately aware that they have changed - they feel different. For others, there is no instant difference and it may appear nothing has happened: however, over the next few days and weeks the reality of what has happened will begin to emerge.

Whatever your experience, if you genuinely meant what you said in the above steps, one of the greatest differences is that God’s Holy Spirit has come to live in you.

… the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Romans 5:5

…having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

Ephesians 1:13

This is vital, because we humans have no power to live the way God wishes us to do, but He doesn’t leave us to struggle to do the impossible on our own. Far from it, He comes alongside us, indeed, within us, to give us the desire to follow Him and the power to do it.

Often people object to taking those steps because of the fear that God might expect something of them that they do not want to do. Or they might have to give up something they love doing. The reality, however, is very different. God made us, He knows everything about us, and He loves us. He knows what will give us the most satisfaction and fulfilment, and should there be anything He puts His finger on saying...

“I don’t want you to do/have this any more,”

...it will only be in order to replace it with something far better and more satisfying to us.

It is a different experience in one way or another for everyone; but you will find that going to a local church and telling them what you have done will be a vital step along the way. They will be delighted to be able to encourage you, guide you, and help you in your new life.

Entrance into this new life is purely by believing what God says is true, and involves no effort on our part. However, having once begun then there are certainly things we can, indeed must, do in order to develop into what God wants and what will be most satisfying to us. Let me qualify that: in one sense every aspect of our Christian lives is the same as our entrance into it - it is by faith and we can’t gain anything by the things we do. Alongside this, the Bible says:

Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

James 2:17 (Also James 2:20, 26)

What this means is that if we believe something, then we will act in a certain way. If the way we act is not consistent with what we claim to believe, then we do not really believe it at all. The Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us in order to enable us by His power to live the way we should; so everything is dependent, not on ourselves, but on Him to do what He has promised.

…”Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,” Says the LORD of hosts.

Zechariah 4:6

A life of faith consists in believing God will do what He has promised He will do, and then acting on it - if we don’t then this shows we don’t believe Him. In my view, one of the most important steps of faith we can take is to read the Bible consistently, because this not only informs us but is the means God uses to change us.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

Many years ago I took the decision that I would get up a little bit earlier every day to give me time to read some of the Bible and to pray. I cannot recommend this highly enough - I think it is the one single thing that has transformed my life more than any other. To start you off, my suggestion would be to put one bookmark in the first chapter of the New Testament (Matthew) and one in the first chapter of the fifth book of the New Testament (Romans). Then every day read one chapter from each, moving the bookmarks along as you do, of course. This will give you an immediate understanding about the life of Jesus, and the teaching of his followers after He had left the earth. If two chapters a day is too much to start with, then just read one and alternate between these bookmarks.

To pray, you simply talk to God as you would a close friend. It might be more helpful to do it audibly, but you can simply think your prayers in your mind and He can hear them just as well.

…for the LORD searches all hearts and understands all the intent of the thoughts.

1 Chronicles 28:9

Tell Him your cares, your successes, your failures, your desires, everything that is on your mind. Ask Him to intervene in the lives of those you know and love (as well as your own), to bring about His perfect will for them and resolve their problems and difficulties. Above all, He loves you and longs to receive your love - so tell Him how you love Him for who He is and what He has done for you; and praise and thank Him for everything He has done.

I think that you will very soon find you want to read more of the Bible than just two chapters. I have used various methods over the years, but my present one is to start with a bookmark at the first chapter of Genesis, I Samuel, Job, Isaiah, Matthew, Romans and Hebrews. Then I read three chapters from each every day. This gives 12 chapters to read from the Old Testament (being two historical readings, one from the poetic books, and one from the prophetic books) and nine from the New Testament as previously mentioned. Some Old Testament chapters can be difficult reading, but the other readings counterbalance this, so you don’t have to plough through many chapters of genealogies or the technicalities of the old sacrificial system for days on end by only reading from one place every day. Of course, there are many helps for daily Bible readings, and you will find these either on-line or at your local Bible-Book shop.

The Reason We Need To Do What We Do

For the atheist it is simple: religion is a man-made idea and can therefore be discounted. However, by definition this means acceptance of the theory of evolution since there is no alternative atheistic explanation for the existence of intelligent life in the universe, and much of this website is created to demonstrate the fatal flaws in the notion. The fact that my challenge remains unanswered after well over a decade is surely proof of this. So I am here taking the next step to look at which ‘version’ of God is the most reliable, since the existence of God is the only alternative to the atheistic idea that the universe created itself, and how we go about communicating with Him.

The scientific method of testing a theory is to assume it is true and then see if observation falsifies it; therefore on this page (as on all the others) I am working on the basis that the teaching of the Bible is true, and as we go along this will demonstrate the error in the alternatives.

The Bible tells us that while everything was created by a perfectly just and loving God, it has been under attack from a diametrically opposing force of evil beings right from the start, who are determined to wreck everything in their hatred of God and His creation.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12

Is there any evidence that this is the case, though?

If the Bible genuinely is God’s revelation to mankind, then bearing the previous paragraph in mind there are three things one would expect:

  1. God would ensure it is distributed widely throughout the world so mankind can know the truth.

  2. When people follow its teaching, they will experience what it claims.

  3. The enemy it tells us about would attack it in order to prevent mankind from knowing the truth.

Even a cursory look at history will tell us that the Bible is the most widely distributed book in the world, with millions testifying to the change in their lives as a result of accepting it; and at the same time it has been savagely attacked with episodes of Bible-burning, laws making possession illegal, periods when it was not available in a language understandable by many, and theories (like evolution) giving the impression it was untrue or distorting what is says. So what we see happening to the book confirms the validity of what it teaches about Him and us.

There are two highly significant faculties seen in all humans:

1. A strong sense of justice, with the belief that those who contravene it must be brought to account and pay a penalty or suffer some form of punishment. Even criminals, while acting contrary to society’s sense of justice, will have their own idea of right and wrong and penalise their fellows for disloyalty, for example.

Regarding justice, this can take many different forms, depending on the culture and the belief system of a person - what one thinks is the right thing to do, another may believe to be wrong - but both will expect their peers to conform to them and be penalised if they do not do so. For example an Islamic State will enforce laws that will be very different from those in a secular country, but both will consider it just for those breaking their laws to pay some kind of penalty.

2. A powerful urge to love, and the willingness to go to extreme lengths in order to demonstrate it, or to protect the object of love.

The Bible says we are made in God’s image, and from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21 we see described these two sides of His nature: love and justice.

Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image… So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Genesis 1:26–27

So once again, what we see around us confirms what the Bible teaches:

  • The Bible says God is Love. Not merely that God has love, or God is loving, although both of those are true, but He is love. Love is the essence of His being and everything He does is in response to His nature of love.

…God is love

1 John 4:8

  • The Bible says all God’s ways are justice. Therefore everything He does is in response to His nature of justice.

…His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, a God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He.

Deuteronomy 32:3–4

If we are in His image, we must be something like Him! He has massive intelligence, knowledge and wisdom: we have a comparatively small amount of intelligence, knowledge and wisdom. He has unimaginably tremendous power: we have a small amount of power. So on this principle, when it comes to love, the greatest, most intense feeling of love we can experience and give/receive - man and woman to each other, parent to child, friend to friend - will only be a tiny fraction of the quality and quantity of God’s love. When it comes to justice we have a strong need to see it fulfilled. So these two aspects of God’s nature can be seen, albeit imperfectly, in every human being, just as stated by the Bible.

The problem is that our natures are now flawed: the first man and woman, deceived by the enemy, disobeyed God’s clear command as can be seen in the description of the event in Genesis 2:15–3:24. As a result, the perfect image of God that had previously been seen in them became distorted. The Bible calls this a sinful nature.  In the same way that a normal baby inherits two eyes, two legs, a heart, etc., from its parents, so it also inherits this distortion in its nature.

As it is written: "There is none righteous, no, not one… for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Romans 3:1023

So while the image of God can still be seen, it is not a perfect image, and love can become selfish, turned in on itself, or concentrated on something other than was originally intended; and justice will always be flavoured by our understanding of what is right and what is wrong, which may not always be accurate since, like Adam and Eve, we are all vulnerable to deception by the enemy. The vast majority of human suffering in the world is caused by the way some people act toward others. They all have a nature of love and justice, but are deceived into concentrating them in the wrong direction. If everyone loved and acted justly in the way God designed, all this suffering would stop instantly.

…you shall love your neighbour as yourself.

Matthew 22:39

…And what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

Micah 6:8

The fall of Adam and Eve appeared to present a conflict in God’s nature. On the one hand His justice demanded that their sin be punished and since He cannot stand the presence of sin this could only mean their destruction - a penalty He had previously warned them about.

...but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

Genesis 2:17

On the other hand, His love demanded that they be spared. We can choose what we are going to do, but God had no choice. The Bible says there are three things that are impossible for God to do:

  • Change

For I am the LORD, I do not change…

Malachi 3:6

  • Lie

…it is impossible for God to lie

Hebrews 6:18

  • Sin

…God cannot be tempted by evil,

James 1:13

He always acts according to His nature. Many people seem to think that if they live decent lives, then the good things they do will outweigh the wrong decisions they have made and at the end of their lives God will let them off and welcome them into heaven. God cannot do this! Just as a fire will consume every combustible thing it meets, so God will punish every wrong act committed.

For our God is a consuming fire.

Hebrews 12:29

For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.

Deuteronomy 4:24

So the writer to the Hebrews points out the importance of our actions:

Therefore… let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear.

Hebrews 12:28

God has no other choice but to destroy those who contravene His laws, because this is His nature and it is impossible for Him to act contrary to it. You may believe that God is different to this, but what you think has no effect on an Almighty God whatsoever - He is who He is, and what you or I think has no effect on Him at all! I am simply reporting what the Bible says about Him; so if you want to believe in a God who is different to this, you need to be very sure your source of information is more reliable than a book that is 1000’s of years old and has stood the test of time with millions of people attesting to its veracity. The penalty for sin is death, and there are no exceptions.

For the wages of sin is death…

Romans 6:23

However, knowing Adam and Eve would blow it, God had a pre-prepared plan that would not only satisfy His justice, but also His love. He took the form of a human being and the death penalty was carried out on Himself.

…our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people.

Titus 2:13–14

Just as a husband might stand between his wife and a gunman shooting at her to take the bullets himself and die so she could live, so Jesus stood between us and the punishment for our sins as it was poured out and took it all so we could be spared. By this means His requirement for justice was fulfilled, and at the same time the objects of His love - humans - were spared.

Because He exists out of time, the sacrifice paid in the person of Jesus Christ, Who was God made man, was as real to Him in the garden of Eden the moment Adam and Eve sinned as it was some 4,000 years later when it actually took place.

We are all born with sinful natures, as has been mentioned, but God does not blame us for this - obviously we have no choice about the way we are born. Nevertheless, if we choose to turn our back on the provision He has made to rescue us from this condition, like the wife moving away from her husband’s protection in my earlier illustration, then He certainly blames us for that and there is no alternative but to receive the penalty ourselves. Jesus said:

“I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”

John 8:12

“And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”

John 3:19

In today’s society it has become normal for all ideas of Hell to be considered the wild raving of religious fanatics; but in the New Testament no-one spoke more about it than Jesus Himself.

"But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after He has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I say to you, fear Him!"

Luke 12:5

See also: Matthew 5:22293010:2818:923:1533Mark 9:4345, 47

(You can jump to them here and then return to text)

It was to protect us from its horror that He went through such suffering. If we ignore the sacrifice Jesus made for us, then the consequences are inevitable:

For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation…

Hebrews 2:2–3

The obvious question to all of this is: how do we avoid turning our backs on the provision God has made for us to ensure we do not face His righteous anger that will fall on every person who has disobeyed Him?

For the great day of His wrath has come, and who is able to stand?"

Revelation 6:17

The answer is very plain:

…Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

1 Thessalonians 1:10

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

John 3:16

There is absolutely nothing we can do to make ourselves right with God. No amount of penance, good works, selfless acts, or whatever can have any effect, because the problem is our own nature and we can no more change that than we can alter our own DNA. But we don’t have to do anything because Jesus has already done it for us! Paul tells us:

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.

Ephesians 2:8–9

So putting all of the above scriptures together, you can see the basic steps I suggested as a way to become a Christian, at the start of this page, have solid foundations.

What we do

Other Faiths

At the start of this page I said alternatives to Christianity would be shown to be invalid as I went along. Primarily this is because the one unique thing about the faith is Jesus Christ - no other belief system has Him and most of them expect us to earn our salvation by the things we do, or don’t do. Jesus disqualifies these, because His way is diametrically opposite. We have nothing to do because He did it all for us. Jesus is unique in history:

  • There are dozens of Old Testament prophecies about the coming Messiah/Christ, all of which were fulfilled in Him, with some of them - including the manner of His birth and death - that were completely outside of His control to bring about. No-one else in history has come anywhere near to doing this. See here for an excellent brief look at the reasons to believe the Old Testament, which, along the way, also confirms the validity of the New Testament.

  • He said that He would be killed, but He would come back to life again. Then He did it, with hundreds of eye witnesses who confirmed that He did. No-one else in history has come anywhere near to doing this.

  • He promised that when He ascended into Heaven He would send the Holy Spirit to be with those who love Him, and the day it first happened transformed terrified disciples into bold preachers of the message He gave them, with miraculous healings and signs to prove the message was true. No-one else in history has come anywhere near to doing this.

  • Even our calendar has been changed as a huge part of the world calculates the year from the time He was born. No-one else in history has come anywhere near to doing this.

(Of course, it may not have been exactly the year 1 A.D. or 1 B.C. when Jesus was born (there is no year 0), as there is slight confusion over this. The point is not the accuracy of the year but the fact that we now date it in this way.)

Having said this, let me conclude by briefly explaining why alternatives to Christianity fall short. One way of doing this is by seeing how the different faiths can account for the others.

Islam

Islam calls Jesus a messenger of God, but it rejects the message He brought, so it is self-contradictory: Jesus said He was the Son of God, who died on the cross for us, but Islam denies these things:

That they said (in boast), "We killed Christ Jesus the son of Mary, the Messenger of Allah";--but they killed him not, nor crucified him, but so it was made to appear to them, and those who differ therein are full of doubts, with no (certain) knowledge, but only conjecture to follow, for of a surety they killed him not.

4:157, Yusif Ali. (Quoted from here. This English version used is the Usuf Ali Translation of 1985. http://quran.com)

Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." But He was speaking of the temple of His body.

John 2:1921

Never has God begotten a son, nor is there any other god besides Him. Were this otherwise, each god would govern his own creation, each holding himself above the other. Exalted be God above their falsehoods!—Qur’an 23:91

...do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'? If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me, and I in Him."

John 10:36–38

Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

1 John 2:22–23

The way Moslems get around this contradiction is by saying that all the writers of the New Testament were lying, and Jesus never made such a claim. Is this really tenable, though? All the Apostles of Jesus were either martyred or imprisoned for what they were saying, and no-one would suffer in this way for something they knew was a lie. Would Islamic suicide bombers kill themselves and others if they knew the promise they would be given dozens of beautiful virgins in paradise for doing so was untrue? If they knew that actually those who murder are destined for Hell?

But… murderers… shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

Revelation 21:8

Of course not! Neither is it valid to claim the Apostles of Jesus deliberately lied about the One whom they had been following for over three years. How can people, who lived hundreds of years after Jesus, know better what He taught and believed than those who lived with Him for over three years and heard hundreds of His sermons? People who were so sure about what He had told them that they were prepared to die in the most appalling ways for it? In fact Peter specifically tells us:

For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the Excellent Glory: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." And we heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain. And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.

2 Peter 1:16–19

“…how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. And we are witnesses of all things which He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem, whom they killed by hanging on a tree. Him God raised up on the third day, and showed Him openly, not to all the people, but to witnesses chosen before by God, even to us who ate and drank with Him after He arose from the dead.”

Acts 10:38–41 (Emphasis mine.)

As we have seen, the Koran says Jesus did not die on the cross and rise again from the dead, but Peter here tells us he was an eyewitness to these things.

Additionally, John, who with Peter was one of the 12 original disciples of Jesus, also tells us he is simply repeating what he has seen and heard himself:

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us—that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full. This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

1 John 1:1–7

So Islam has no logical answer to the teaching of Christianity. On the other hand, the Bible has one for the claims of Islam:

…For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.

2 Corinthians 11:14

But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.

Galatians 1:8

Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world… the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

1 John 4:1–35:19

It points out that the enemy of God and man is able to masquerade in a form that can appear to us to be from God Himself, and deceive us into accepting what otherwise we would not. There are many very fine and sincere people who accept the Islamic faith (and there are many who do the most appalling acts against their fellow men in the name of Islam too, of course!)  since they all bear the image of a just and loving God to the same degree as the rest of us; but as a Christian I have to say I believe they have been deceived into serving the one who deceived the first man and woman in the garden of Eden.

Some Other Faiths

There are other religious faiths that believe there are many Gods, but cannot account for the One True God of the Bible. (This is not the place to go into the doctrine of the Trinity, but in brief the One God reveals Himself to us in three different forms: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.) They therefore dispute what Jesus taught:

Jesus answered him, "The first of all the commandments is: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.

Mark 12:29

On the other hand, the Bible shows that these ‘gods’ are, in fact, a part of the forces of the enemy, and should be ignored:

You shall not go after other gods, the gods of the peoples who are all around you.

Deuteronomy 6:14

For the LORD is great and greatly to be praised; He is also to be feared above all gods.

1 Chron 16:25

Thus you shall say to them: "The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish from the earth and from under these heavens."

Jeremiah 10:11

For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords), yet for us there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things,

1 Corinthians 8:56

...in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience…

Ephesians 2:2

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.

1 Peter 5:8

Religious beliefs that involve reincarnation are also invalid, apart from anything else because more people have been alive at the same time during our generation than have ever lived in the entire history of the world. So there are not enough previous lives for everyone even to have had just one, although often those who promote the theory claim to have had several. The Bible teaches we have just one life.

And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment…

Hebrews 9:27

The choices we make in this life determine our eternal destiny. We do not keep on coming back if we got it wrong previously and have another chance to get it right.

The false memories of previous lives, I believe, come from dreams and/or the spirit forces previously mentioned. They may appear to be real, but this is an illusion. As an example, my daughter, for some years, believed that I had thrown her up in the air when she was very small and her head had become stuck in the branches of a bush that was growing over our heads in the porch of our house. We called for the fire brigade, and then they all stood around drinking tea and laughing at her before they bothered to get her down. It was only when she was much older that she became prepared to believe that it was a dream and had not really happened - she knows me and knows I would never have acted in this manner. Other examples, on public record in the UK, are the innocent people wrongfully accused of child molestation as a result of the false memories of their supposed victims.

The human mind is very susceptible to deception, which is why it is essential we have something outside of ourselves on which we can rely as a source of absolute truth. The Bible says:

There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.

Proverbs 14:12

Millions of people have read the Bible and proved it to be reliable. I have spent a lifetime poring through it, (I will be 77 this year) and with all my heart I recommend it to you. It is certainly the case that there are some intellectuals (and others) who have read the Bible and dispute its validity. It cannot be understood fully by man’s intellect, though.

But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty… that no flesh should glory in His presence.

1 Corinthians 1:2729

This being the case it is obvious that in order to understand it fully, one needs something more than intelligence.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17

It is the Holy Spirit who reveals these things to us; so if you wait until you understand everything before you take the steps I mentioned earlier, you will wait forever. The way we come to God is perfectly logical and understandable; but it is only after doing so that the Holy Spirit comes to live within us in order to teach us the truth:

And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you… But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things…

John 14:161726

I began this page by pointing out that God is both just and loving. His love for you is far greater than you can ever imagine in this life; but as you begin to experience His loving presence in your life after turning yourself over to Him in the way I described, you will never regret it!

Matthew 5:22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, 'Raca!' shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, 'You fool!' shall be in danger of hell fire.

Matthew 5:29-30 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.

Matthew 10:28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Matthew 18:9  And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.

Matthew 23:15, 33  "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves... Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the condemnation of hell?

Mark 9:43, 45, 47 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— ... And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched— ...And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire—
