The Bible: God's Word

Index

Introduction

NOTE: where Bible references appear as hyperlinks, clicking on them will take you to a website where the verse(s) can be seen.

Jesus said man should not live by bread alone but by every word that comes from the mouth of God (Matt 4:4). His replies to Satan were,

"It is written…"

Matt 4:4, 7, 10

So clearly, Jesus accepted the written scriptures as God's words from God's mouth and said scripture cannot be broken (John 10:35), which Paul reiterates when he says all scripture is God-breathed (2 Tim 3:16) and said he believed everything written in the law and the prophets (Acts 24:4). Jesus also accepted Moses as the one doing the writing in the Torah (the first five books of the Old Testament):

"…have you not read in the book of Moses…"

Mark 12:26

Indeed, Moses is mentioned by name 80 times in 79 verses in the New Testament, of which 45 attribute the Torah to him. (If you wish to see them now you can click on this link and then click on the link to the Introduction at the end of the list to return to the top of this section). Acceptance of his authorship of Genesis goes back a very long way in Church history. Saint Augustine (354-430 A.D.) said in relation to the opening verse of John’s gospel:

"Now let some misbelieving Arian or other step forward and say that the Word of God was made. How can it be that the Word of God was made, when God made all things through the Word? ...So then, believe the evangelist. For he could have said, “In the beginning God made the Word,” just as Moses said, In the beginning God made heaven and earth, and then run through all the rest like this: “God said, Let it be made, and it was made.”"

(Saint Augustine. (2009). Homilies on the Gospel of John 1–40; 1.11. (A. D. Fitzgerald & B. Ramsey, Eds., E. Hill, Trans.) (Vol. 12, p. 47). Hyde Park, NY: New City Press. Emphasis mine.)

Therefore none of the Torah was put together by people under the influence of local myths and customs from a mishmash of aural stories passed down from father to son and/or writings from various unknown people, as is claimed by some scholars and intellectuals today.

The ludicrous notion that writing did not exist at the time of Moses and therefore he could not have written anything is partly based on the evolutionary notion that living things improve over time, therefore people then were less intelligent than we are today. This is falsified by scientific observation that proves the only change we see through mutation (which is the only possible mechanism for evolution) is to create deterioration. So, for example, quite some time ago doctors told us that over 1,000 human ailments are due to mutation: which means we have not improved over time. Therefore, even if the written word did not exist before Moses (although there is evidence that it did), with intelligence at least equal to our own but probably greater, under the direct guidance of God it would have been no problem whatsoever for Moses to have written God's words.

Of course, for those who disregard the Bible they would ignore its contents; but for those accepting it to be God's revelation to mankind, since it clearly states that Moses wrote things down, it would be totally contradictory to say he couldn't write!

It is also claimed that paper did not exist at that time: what's wrong with papyrus?

Included in those written words to which Jesus referred, is the clear teaching that Moses was the human who wrote down God's words in the Torah. So when 'clever' people popped up hundreds or thousands of years later with the JEDP hypothesis, for example (which claims different authors for the Torah, partly based on different styles of writing), I reject it. It is only since the 18th century that this undermining of the validity and authority of the Bible began to infiltrate the church: before that the orthodox teaching was that the whole of the Bible was literally God's word and the first chapters of Genesis were literally true. Why should people living thousands of years after the events know better than those living at the time?

Since Moses was writing down the words of God, we would not necessarily expect them all to be in exactly the same style (for example) as if a single man had written it, because God is not a man and not confined to the limitations of a man's brain. Therefore the evidence that they are the direct words of God in the Torah because they are different to the way a man would write them is being used to claim Moses wasn't responsible and it must therefore be the work of different people living long after him - when there are 72 Old Testament verses toward the bottom of this page that clearly show it was Moses who wrote them down. If you wish you can ‘jump’ there now and ‘Return to text’ (Introduction) from the end of the list of verses.

Introduction

Some of the key verses are here, and the words in brackets are mine to show what the reader in the original Hebrew would see.

"…Moses wrote all the words of the LORD;"

Ex 24:4

"So the LORD spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend;"

Ex 33:11

"I speak with him face to face, even plainly, and not in dark sayings;"

Num 12:8

So Moses wrote this law (Torah) and delivered it to the priests,

Deut 31:9

So it was, when Moses had completed writing the words of this law (Torah) in a book, when they were finished, that Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying: "Take this Book of the Law (Torah), and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God…”

Deut 31:24–26

And there, in the presence of the children of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law (Torah) of Moses, which he had written.

Josh 8:32

"But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face."

Deut 34:10

How can scholars ignore - indeed, contradict - what these 72 verses so clearly say? Well, that is the Torah; what about the prophets?

The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah… to whom the word of the LORD came…

Jeremiah 1:1–2

the word of the LORD came expressly to Ezekiel the priest…

Ezekiel 1:3

…I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the LORD…

Daniel 9:2

The word of the LORD that came to Hosea the son of Beeri…

Hosea 1:1

The word of the LORD that came to Joel the son of Pethuel…

Joel 1:1

The words of Amos… And he said: "The LORD roars from Zion, and utters His voice…Thus says the LORD…

Amos 1:1–3

The vision of Obadiah. Thus says the Lord GOD…

Obadiah 1:1

Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah…

Jonah 1:1

The word of the LORD that came to Micah of Moresheth…

Micah 1:1

… The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite… Thus says the LORD:

Nahum 1:112

The burden which the prophet Habakkuk saw… Then the LORD answered me and said…

Habakkuk 1:1–2

The word of the LORD which came to Zephaniah the son of Cushi…

Zephaniah 1:1

…the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet

Haggai 1:1

…the word of the LORD came to Zechariah the son of Berechiah

Zechariah 1:1

The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi.

Malachi 1:1

Quite clearly the prophetic books of the Bible are equally God's words, in a similar way to the Torah, although Moses was the only one to have 'face-to-face’ encounters with God, of course. As the Bible teaches us:

for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1:21

Reference to "The word(s) of God" appears in 39 verses in the Old Testament and 50 in the New Testament, while "The Word(s) of the Lord" appears in 326 verses in the Old Testament and 30 in the New Testament. All these verses can be seen at the bottom of this page. If you wish you can ‘jump’ there now and ‘Return to text Word of God’ from the end of each list of verses.

Return to text 1

How dare those Christian scholars and intellectuals who make these claims (not all do) manipulate God's word into something quite clearly opposite to the plain meaning of the text? E.g. the word of God says Moses wrote the Torah, while they say he didn't! The word of God says He created everything in six days precisely 2,008 years before the birth of Abraham [see table below], while they say He didn't! And that is a genuine question, because I am baffled - particularly when we read:

"Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight;"

Isaiah 5:20–21

"…lean not on your own understanding;"

Proverbs 3:5

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God…;"

2 Timothy 3:16

"Every word of God is pure… Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar;"

Proverbs 30:5–6

"But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise" (which qualifies me to be writing this!)

1 Corinthians 1:27

"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth".

John 16:13

If intellect and scholarship could lead us into truth, then the Richard Dawkins of this world would be Christians. It is only full submission to God's word under the guidance of the Holy Spirit that will bring us into truth...

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path…

Psalm 119:105

…but it cannot perform that function if it is distorted into saying something different from what the human writers clearly intended when they were putting God’s word into writing. Is Almighty God, whose power and wisdom created the vastness of the universe that contains such incredible complexity right down to the molecular level of all things in which modern science has barely scratched the surface of the tip of the iceberg of it all, incapable of transmitting accurately his word to His creation? Would He, who chooses the foolish things of the world, present His word in a format that only the wise can understand?

Genealogies continued

* Shem was the middle son (Gen 9:24; 10:21). Noah was 600 at the time of the flood, and Shem was 100 two years after the flood. Therefore Noah was 502 when Shem was born.

** In Acts 7:4 Stephen said Abram was 75 when he left Haran when his father had died aged 205, and was therefore born when his father was 130.

To anyone who would say it is wrong to use the above figures in this way, I would ask, "Why did God give them to us, if it was not to use them? Why do we have such a precise list of years if it is not to tell us when these births took place?" Since Gen 5:1 tells us...

"This is the book of the genealogy of Adam"

...and Gen 11:10...

"This is the genealogy of Shem,"

...these two passage are clearly intended to give us the relevant information about this family tree from Adam to Abraham; and it is clearly impossible to shoehorn any additional years into these genealogies without directly contradicting the word of God since there is an unbroken series showing the age of each person at the time of the birth of the next one on the list.

To those who say it is impossible for people to live so long therefore the numbers are not intended to be literal but are figurative, I ask figurative of what? What do the numbers represent then? Certainly numbers in the Bible do have meaning, but unless you can tell me what 29, 187, 162 and 502 (for example) represent, then this is clearly not the case.

What about:

This is the sum of the years of Abraham's life which he lived: one hundred and seventy-five years.
Genesis 25:7

If anyone claims he did not live 175 years they are actually accusing the Bible of lying!

Since Exodus 20:9–11 and 31:17 make Adam's creation six 24-hour days into the earth's history and there appears to be universal agreement that Abraham was born no earlier, but probably later, than 2,000 B.C., this puts the age of the earth at no more, but probably slightly less, than 6,000 years. The date of his birth as given in four different sources:

BC 1852-1872: christianity.stackexchange.com

Appllcation interpretation

Application: Interpretation

There will be some who say in response to this that they certainly do believe the Bible is the inspired word of God, but that we need to interpret it correctly; and they will claim I am not doing this. Perhaps a good example of this would be from the website of the Bible Society, where on the page that asks the question,

“Daniel and Jonah – history or story?”

...they respond by saying some would take these not to be historical accounts but parables:

"In fact they're just making a judgement about what sort of story it is, while still believing it's inspired Scripture."

Their conclusion is:

"What difference would it make to how I read the story if I think it's not historically true?' Sometimes the answer is, 'Quite a lot'; at other times it's, 'None at all.'"

A quote from another page of their website shows the fallacy of that conclusion:

"So, in order to get closer to the meaning of Scripture, it helps to ask: what did a verse or passage mean to the writer and their first readers, back then?"

It must surely be glaringly obvious that only when we interpret a scripture according to the original intention of the person writing it that we can be understanding it accurately. Therefore it will always make a difference if we assume a passage is parable when it was written as history, or vice versa.

On what basis do we decide that passages are parables, though? It is very obvious that a parable is being used when the teaching of Jesus is reported in the gospels, for example, or when Jotham used a fictitious story in Judges 9 to make a point. But if we decide that because they are parables we can therefore call anything we read a parable, we destroy the entire meaning of the text. In that case we could claim the virgin birth of Jesus was a parable; His turning water into wine was a parable; His resurrection was a parable. Indeed, why not say His entire life was a parable and He never actually existed at all?

What about Elijah stopping rain for three and a half years and then praying and it suddenly appeared; or Israel walking through the Red Sea; or the walls of Jericho falling down? Were they all parables? Why do I mention them specifically? Because the New Testament says they were examples of what happens when people exercise faith:

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain,
and the earth produced its fruit.

James 5:17–18

By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land,

Hebrews 11:29

By faith the walls of Jericho fell down

Hebrews 11:30

If those events did not actually happen, then they cannot possibly be examples of faith. It is only if they were real events that they can demonstrate what faith can achieve. To claim that fictional stories are examples of real life would be like claiming that if you can find the right wand you can perform amazing magic on the basis that this is what happens in the Harry Potter books! Harry Potter is fiction and therefore has no relevance to reality; and likewise, if the miraculous events in the Old Testament did not happen, they too have no relevance to reality. So it makes an enormous difference whether they literally took place or not.

If you think these events really did take place, then on what basis would you claim other incidents in the Old Testament did not? It would be entirely arbitrary based on your own personal preference. As St Augustine said in his comment on rationalism, referred to in his Reply to Faustus the Manichæan, Book XXXII:19:

"Your design, clearly, is to deprive Scripture of all authority, and to make every man’s mind the judge of what passage of Scripture he is to approve of, and what to disapprove of. This is not to be subject to Scripture in matter of faith, but to make Scripture subject to you. Instead of making the high authority of Scripture the reason of approval, every man makes his approval the reason for thinking a passage correct."

Don’t forget that the parables of Jesus were taken from real life - from events that people could see happening around them. So it would hardly be consistent to say Old Testament events were parables because they could not possibly happen on the basis that Jesus told parables of events that happened regularly!

To return to the point regarding the intention of the original writers, Professor James Barr, Regius Professor of Hebrew at the University of Oxford, has written:

“Probably, so far as I know, there is no professor of Hebrew or Old Testament at any world-class university who does not believe that the writer(s) of Genesis 1–11 intended to convey to their readers the ideas that: (a) creation took place in a series of six days which were the same as the days of 24 hours we now experience (b) the figures contained in the Genesis genealogies provided by simple addition a chronology from the beginning of the world up to later stages in the biblical story (c) Noah’s flood was understood to be world-wide and extinguish all human and animal life except for those in the ark. Or, to put it negatively, the apologetic arguments which suppose the "days" of creation to be long eras of time, the figures of years not to be chronological, and the flood to be a merely local Mesopotamian flood, are not taken seriously by any such professors, as far as I know.”

That was quoted from here, where it says:

Letter from Professor James Barr to David C.C. Watson of the UK, dated 23 April 1984. Copy held by the author. Note that Prof. Barr does not claim to believe that Genesis is historically true; he is just telling us what, in his opinion, the language was meant to convey.

More recently, just nine years ago in April 2012, Jud Davies (see below) wrote this:

"Hugh Williamson is the current Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford University. Oxford is perhaps the most prestigious university in the world, and Williamson is one of the top Hebraists anywhere. In an email he responded, “So far as the days of Genesis 1 are concerned, I am sure that Professor Barr was correct. . . . I have not met any Hebrew professors who had the slightest doubt about this unless they were already committed to some alternative by other considerations that do not arise from a straightforward reading of the Hebrew text as it stands.”"

"I also emailed Barr’s letter to Emanuel Tov of Hebrew University Jerusalem; he would be on anyone’s list of Hebrew experts. Professor Tov responded in kind: “For the biblical people this was history, difficult as it is for us to accept this view.” Here was confirmation from a Jewish man who spoke and thought in Hebrew."

Dr Jud Davis is the Associate Professor of Greek at Bryan College. Dr Davis earned his PhD in biblical studies from the University of Sheffield in England. His discussion on the topic from which these extracts come, can be seen here.

On that basis, since the Bible Society believes we should interpret scriptures according to the way they were intended by the writers, then we should accept that the first two chapters of Genesis are to be taken literally. To do otherwise would be to contradict their principle I quoted earlier and to impose modern, naturalistic assumptions on the text. It is very clear that for the most part, the passages written off as ‘parables’ are those containing the ‘miraculous’, bowing to today’s society that insists the only things that could ever have taken place in the past are those we can see today.

One of the most common examples of 'rewriting' the Bible is to claim the six days of Genesis chapter one are long periods of time. Well, if I said to you...

"It took me six days to make this model plane, and then I had a rest for one day before starting anything else."

...would you say to yourself:

"He means it took him six months to build the plane and then he had a rest that continues to this day?"

Of course you wouldn't. So what do you think Moses and the Israelites thought God meant when He told them how long it took Him? Please note, the following verses are quoting what God actually said to Moses.

"For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day."

Exodus 20:11

"It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed."

Exodus 31:17

Did Moses think, "God said He created everything in six days, so that means He did it in over 13.7 billion years?" Of course he didn't! When God said that to Moses He knew Moses would understand Israel were to work for six days and rest for one day every week because that is what God did when He created everything. Therefore, if He hadn't done it in six literal days, He was deceiving them: He was lying.

God is not a man, that He should lie...

Numbers 23:19

...it is impossible for God to lie...

Hebrews 6:18

in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,

Titus 1:2

Another badly misused argument against the literal interpretation of the Bible is regarding metaphor and simile. So, for example, where we read…

It is He who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers, Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.

Isaiah 40:22

…they would say that the heavens are not literally a curtain, so God did not spread them out like this. However, on that basis, when we read…

He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.

Psalm 91:4

…we should assume that because God does not have feathered wings, therefore He will not protect us in that way! The whole point of metaphor and simile is to use an illustration to emphasise a truth. So in the same way a mother bird will protect its young with its wings, so God will protect us; and in the same way that you and I will draw curtains open, so God expanded the universe during creation week when He created the stars.

We have two choices here: either accept that God knew what He was talking about when He gave His words to His people to write down for our future benefit; or believe that the Bible is simply a collection of writings of religious people who were using their best efforts to explain how they believed things were and what God would want to say. If you take the second view, you cannot at the same time claim you believe the Bible is the inspired word of God:

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,

2 Timothy 3:16

The beginning of the above verse is translated: “All Scripture is God-breathed” in The International Standard Version, The Literal Translation of the Bible and The Modern King James Version; while the English Standard Version puts it: “All Scripture is breathed out by God.” So ‘inspiration’ does not merely mean ‘being given by God the enthusiasm to write’, but ‘being given the words by God to write’.

Application theistic evolution

Application: theistic evolution

It is important to remember the origin, validity and authenticity of God's word when we come to the present-day attack on it that originates from the theory of evolution, which clashes with the Bible right from the beginning. The fact is that evolution (I am aware that 'evolution' usually refers to the development of life, but it is dependent on the universe evolving also, so the term is valid) contradicts Genesis 1 & 2 from start to finish, so even if it were accepted that it is poetry and not referring to literal 24-hour days (and I most certainly do not accept that), it is still a direct contradiction:

  • The Bible says the earth was made in the beginning when the heavens were made (Gen 1:1)

Evolution says the earth was formed 9-10 billion years after the heavens were made in the beginning

  • The Bible says the primitive earth was created before light (Gen 1:2)

Evolution says light from the suns in the universe came before the earth began

  • The Bible says the earth began as a formless mass of water (Gen 1:2)

Evolution says it began as a formless mass of molten rock, chemicals and gases

  • The Bible says the earth was formed before the sun (Gen 1:16, 19)

Evolution says the sun was formed before the earth

  • The Bible says vegetation was formed before the sun  (Gen 1:12, 13)

Evolution says the sun was formed before vegetation

  • The Bible says God created birds before land creatures (Gen 1:20, 23)

Evolution says birds evolved from land creatures, so came afterwards

  • The Bible says God created land creatures from the ground (Gen 2:19)

Evolution says land creatures evolved from sea creatures

  • The Bible says God created Adam from the dust of the earth (Gen 2:7)

Evolution says man evolved from land creatures

  • The Bible says God created Eve from a part of Adam's body (Gen 2:21, 22)

Evolution says women evolved from land creatures

  • The Bible says Adam and Eve were the only couple from whom the entire human race
    originates (Gen 3:20)

Evolution says the human race came from a group that evolved from the 'common ancestor'

  • The Bible says Abraham was born 2,008 years after Adam was created

Evolution says Abraham was born up to around 200,000 years after man evolved

  • Jesus said humans were around from the beginning of creation (Mark 10:6)

Evolution says humans appeared over 13.5 billion years after the beginning of creation

If it is claimed that the sixth day was not the beginning of creation, I would point out that at the beginning of the film The Sound of Music, Maria is seen rushing into the convent. This is not in the first few frames of the film, but it is still valid to call it "the beginning." What would be impossible to say, is that the von Trapp family escape from the Germans with nuns incapacitating the latter's' car is at the beginning of the film, because that happens at the end (note: it's not the very last thing that happens, but still at the end!); but this is what theistic evolution claims for Jesus’s words!

Return to text 3

The notion that Moses did not write the Torah is a close bedfellow of theistic evolution (the idea that God created by means of evolution), since in order to support the distortion of scripture to support this theory it is necessary to show that it did not come directly from God. However, this is falsified by the 72 verses below, along with the clear teaching of Jesus in the gospels, the apostles in the Acts, and Paul, Peter and John in their epistles, who treat the Old Testament as literal truth and Moses as the writer of the Torah. If you wish you can ‘jump’ there now and ‘Return to text theistic evolution' from the end of each list of verses.

There are 60 New Testament allusions to Genesis 1-11 specifically, and 103 for the whole of Genesis: the full list can be seen at the end of this website page. So theistic evolution and the authorship of the Torah is not merely a minor matter of how one views the first two chapters of Genesis, but cascades throughout the whole Bible into undermining its truth.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will reject you from being priest for Me; because you have forgotten the law (Torah) of your God, I also will forget your children.

Hosea 4:6

In Hosea the error was in mixing the worship of other gods with the worship of The God; here we have the mixing of man-made theories with the truth of the Bible.

Theistic evolution is based on the foundational premise that throughout Genesis 1 & 2 God could only have worked according to the currently observable laws of science and did nothing miraculous. This is contradictory because why would God work differently at the beginning from how He works throughout the rest of the Bible? If God couldn't work miraculously at the beginning of the Old Testament, then He couldn't have done so at the beginning of the New Testament either, which rules out the virgin birth, miracles and resurrection of Jesus.

On the other hand, if, as has been mentioned to me, theistic evolution does not accept every aspect of the evolutionary premise (for example it might claim that there was a literal Adam and Eve, which atheistic evolution denies) then on what basis do they hold these differences? If it is because it conflicts with the Bible, then why not go the whole hog and abandon the whole of the evolutionary hypothesis for precisely the same reason? If they are prepared to ignore what atheistic evolutionists would claim is proven science in order to accept these differences in belief (regarding Adam and Eve for example) then why do they accept the rest of the so-called 'proven science' of evolution? Particularly as there is a significant amount of scientific observation that proves evolutionary theory is an unsubstantiated hypothesis with no observational science to support it but plenty to contradict it! Do they also believe that Adam was formed from the dust of the ground and Eve from a part of his side? If so, then why not believe all other living things appeared the way Genesis describes? If not, then why believe the Bible when it says they existed, but not believe it when it says how they were formed?

Intellectual approach

The Intellectual Approach

It may be thought from the above that I am against scholarship or intellect. This is not the case, and there is certainly much to be gained from a scholarly approach to Bible study. The problem arises where scholarship and intellect result in contradicting the clear teaching of the Bible. An example of what one intellectual thought about the intellectual approach to the scriptures can be seen in C S Lewis's book, 'The Great Divorce', which, like 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe', is not intended to be taken literally but is an allegory illustrating particular truths. Here is an extract of a synopsis of the book by Weldon Turner (the ghost is from hell and the spirit, Dick, is from heaven. This describes their meeting):

Chapter 5 - The Intellectuals

Lewis then overhears an exchange between the ghost-described in Chapter 2 as having a 'cultured' voice-and a spirit named Dick.  Dick describes the grey town as Hell - if the ghost choses to return - and Purgatory, if he does not.

On Earth, they were fellow intellectuals who at times discussed matters of faith. We learn the cultured ghost had been both a priest in the Anglican Church, and an apostate. He argues that opinion, born of intellect, is not sinful, but heroic. Additionally, he postulates the 'doctrine' of Jesus' Resurrection vitiated against the 'critical faculties which God had given me', and therefore rejected the Resurrection.

Dick admonishes the ghost, charging his writings and lectures were for popularity, prestige, and book sales, adding: '"We were afraid of crude salvationism, afraid of a breach with  the spirit of the age, afraid of ridicule, afraid (above all) of real spiritual fears and hopes."'

The ghost insists that his ideas were honestly formed, but Dick returns that, even so, they had drifted so far away from their faith, they began to believe their own lies, the way a drunk believes he has no problem with alcohol.

*

The Ghost refuses to give up his intellect, his 'inquiring mind'. To return to the childishness of 'faith' is 'preposterous.' Suddenly he remembers he can't go with the spirit to Heaven anyway, he must return to a Theological Society (in Hell), where, he implies, he is a member of some status. He will be delivering a paper that examines what Jesus' 'mature' views would have been had he lived. The ghost turns away, back to Hell, humming softly to itself.

* I have omitted three paragraphs at this point, but the full synopsis can be seen here. However, regardless of C S Lewis’s belief’s on particular issues, it is clear from this that he did not consider intellect to be the guarantee of truth.

Conclusion

Conclusion

God gave us His word to show us the way, teach us the truth and protect us from error. It can only accomplish this if it is accepted as He gave it to us. Second-guessing and trying to squeeze man-made theories into it when they clearly contradict it, can only take us further from the truth rather than closer to it.

In the following lists the definitions are from Strong’s Dictionaries.

The intention in including all these verses here is not for you to read every one necessarily, but simply to show the mass of scriptures that exist; and to enable you to jump to any at random to see they do include the words claimed.

14 Deut 29:21 And the LORD would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the Law (Torah)

15 Deut 29:27 Then the anger of the LORD was aroused against this land, to bring on it every curse that is written in this book.

16 Deut 29:29 "The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law (Torah).

17 Deut 30:10 if you obey the voice of the LORD your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law (Torah)…

18 Deut 31:9 So Moses wrote this law (Torah) and delivered it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel.

19 Deut 31:10 And Moses commanded them, saying: "At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of release, at the Feast of Tabernacles,

20 Deut 31:11 when all Israel comes to appear before the LORD your God in the place which He chooses, you shall read this law (Torah) before all Israel in their hearing.

21 Deut 31:12  Gather the people together, men and women and little ones, and the stranger who is within your gates, that they may hear and that they may learn to fear the LORD your God and carefully observe all the words of this law (Torah),

22 Deut 31:24 So it was, when Moses had completed writing the words of this law (Torah) in a book, when they were finished,

23 Deut 31:25 that Moses commanded the Levites, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, saying:

24 Deut 31:26 "Take this Book of the Law (Torah), and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there as a witness against you;

25 Deut 32:46 and he said to them: "Set your hearts on all the words which I testify among you today, which you shall command your children to be careful to observe—all the words of this law (Torah).

26 Deut 33:4 Moses commanded a law (Torah) for us, a heritage of the congregation of Jacob.

27 Deut 33:10 They shall teach Jacob Your judgments, and Israel Your law (Torah).

28 Deut 34:10 But since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face…

29 Josh 1:7 Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law (Torah) which Moses My servant commanded you; do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go.

30 Josh 1:8 This Book of the Law (Torah) shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it…

31 Josh 8:31 as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded the children of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law (Torah) of Moses: "an altar of whole stones over which no man has wielded an iron tool." And they offered on it burnt offerings to the LORD, and sacrificed peace offerings.

32 Josh 8: 32 And there, in the presence of the children of Israel, he wrote on the stones a copy of the law (Torah) of Moses, which he had written.

33 Josh 8:34 And afterward he read all the words of the law (Torah), the blessings and the cursings, according to all that is written in the Book of the Law (Torah).

34 Josh 22:5 But take careful heed to do the commandment and the law (Torah) which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you,

35 Josh 23:6 Therefore be very courageous to keep and to do all that is written in the Book of the Law (Torah) of Moses, lest you turn aside from it to the right hand or to the left,

36 1 Kings 2:3 And keep the charge of the LORD your God: to walk in His ways, to keep His statutes, His commandments, His judgments, and His testimonies, as it is written in the Law (Torah) of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn;

37 2 Kings 14:6 But the children of the murderers he did not execute, according to what is written in the Book of the Law (Torah) of Moses, in which the LORD commanded,

38 2 Kings 21:8 and I will not make the feet of Israel wander anymore from the land which I gave their fathers—only if they are careful to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the law (Torah) that My servant Moses commanded them."

39 2 Kings 22:8 Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the Book of the Law (Torah) in the house of the LORD."

40 2 Kings 22:11 Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law (Torah), that he tore his clothes.

41 2 Kings 23:2 The king went up to the house of the LORD with all the men of Judah, and with him all the inhabitants of Jerusalem—the priests and the prophets and all the people, both small and great. And he read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant which had been found in the house of the LORD.

42 2 Kings 23:3 Then the king stood by a pillar and made a covenant before the LORD, to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes, with all his heart and all his soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people took a stand for the covenant

43 2 Kings 23:21 Then the king commanded all the people, saying, "Keep the Passover to the LORD your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant."

44 2 Kings 23:24 Moreover Josiah put away those who consulted mediums and spiritists, the household gods and idols, all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might perform the words of the law (Torah) which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD.

45 2 Kings 23:25 Now before him there was no king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart, with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the Law (Torah) of Moses;

46 1 Chron 16:40 to offer burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering regularly morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the Law (Torah) of the LORD which He commanded Israel;

47 2 Chron 17:9 So they taught in Judah, and had the Book of the Law (Torah) of the LORD with them…

48 2 Chron 23:18 Also Jehoiada appointed the oversight of the house of the LORD to the hand of the priests, the Levites, whom David had assigned in the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the Law (Torah) of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, as it was established by David.

49 2 Chron 25:4 However he did not execute their children, but did as it is written in the Law (Torah) in the Book of Moses, where the LORD commanded…

50 2 Chron 31:3 The king also appointed a portion of his possessions for the burnt offerings: for the morning and evening burnt offerings, the burnt offerings for the Sabbaths and the New Moons and the set feasts, as it is written in the Law (Torah) of the LORD.

51 2 Chron 33:8 and I will not again remove the foot of Israel from the land which I have appointed for your fathers—only if they are careful to do all that I have commanded them, according to the whole law (Torah) and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses."

52 2 Chron 34:14 Now when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the Book of the Law (Torah) of the LORD given by Moses.

53 2 Chron 34:15 Then Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, "I have found the Book of the Law (Torah) in the house of the LORD." And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan.

54 2 Chron 34:16 So Shaphan carried the book to the king, bringing the king word, saying, "All that was committed to your servants they are doing.

55 2 Chron 35:12 Then they removed the burnt offerings that they might give them to the divisions of the fathers' houses of the lay people, to offer to the LORD, as it is written in the Book of Moses. And so they did with the cattle

56 2 Chron 35:26 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his goodness, according to what was written in the Law (Torah) of the LORD,

57 Ezra 3:2 Then Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and his brethren, arose and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law (Torah) of Moses the man of God

58 Ezra 6:18 They assigned the priests to their divisions and the Levites to their divisions, over the service of God in Jerusalem, as it is written in the Book of Moses.

59 Ezra 7:6 this Ezra came up from Babylon; and he was a skilled scribe in the Law (Torah) of Moses, which the LORD God of Israel had given.

60 Neh 8:1 Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law (Torah) of Moses, which the LORD had commanded Israel

61 Neh 8:3 Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law (Torah)

62 Neh 8:8 So they read distinctly from the book, in the Law (Torah) of God

63 Neh 8:14 And they found written in the Law (Torah), which the LORD had commanded by Moses

64 Neh 8:18 Also day by day, from the first day until the last day, he read from the Book of the Law (Torah) of God.

65 Neh 9:3 And they stood up in their place and read from the Book of the Law (Torah) of the LORD their God

66 Neh 9:13 "You came down also on Mount Sinai, And spoke with them from heaven, and gave them just ordinances and true laws (Torah), Good statutes and commandments.

67 Neh 9:14 You made known to them Your holy Sabbath, And commanded them precepts, statutes and laws (Torah), By the hand of Moses Your servant.

68 Neh 10:34 We cast lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for bringing the wood offering into the house of our God, according to our fathers' houses, at the appointed times year by year, to burn on the altar of the LORD our God as it is written in the Law (Torah).

69 Neh 13:1 On that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people…

70 Dan 9:11 Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law (Torah), and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law (Torah) of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him

71 Dan 9:13 "As it is written in the Law (Torah) of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us…

72 Mal 4:4 "Remember the Law (Torah) of Moses, My servant, Which I commanded him in Horeb for all Israel, With the statutes and judgments.
